How To Use a Kensington Cable Lock With the Dock (Optional Security)

This dock has a Kensington lock slot so you can attach a cable lock and help stop “walk-away” theft in offices, classrooms, or shared desks. The lock is sold separately.
What you need
  • A Kensington-style cable lock (any standard one that fits a Kensington slot)
  • The dock
  • A solid object to lock to (desk leg, metal table frame, fixed shelf bracket)

1
Find something solid to lock to
  • Pick a fixed object that cannot be easily moved, like a desk leg or heavy table frame.
  • Do not lock it to something loose like a chair or a light table.

2
Loop the cable around that object
  • Wrap the cable around the object.
  • Feed the lock end through the cable loop (if your lock uses a loop).
  • Pull it tight so the cable sits snug.

3
Find the lock slot on the dock
  • Look for the small rectangular lock slot on the dock.
  • It is located at the back side of the dock.

4
Insert the lock into the slot
  • Push the lock tip into the dock’s lock slot.
  • Turn the key or dial the combination (depending on the lock type) to lock it.
You should feel it “grab” and stay in place.

5
Test it
  • Gently pull the lock.
  • The lock should not come out.
  • The dock should stay secured to the desk by the cable.

If the lock will not fit
  • Make sure it is a Kensington-style lock, not a different laptop lock type.
  • Try inserting it straight in (do not force it).
  • If it still does not fit, the lock tip type may be different, so use a standard Kensington-compatible lock.

Helpful reminders
  • This is a theft deterrent, not a guarantee.
  • Keep the key or combination in a safe place, since you will need it to remove the lock later.
