Understanding DQHD (5120×1440) Display Support Through Secure KVM Switches

Last updated: 12/09/2025

Some users may notice their DQHD (5120×1440) displays are not achieving expected refresh rates when connected through Secure KVM switches. This article outlines the capabilities and limitations of Secure KVMs and how various processors affect 5K video output.

This covers the following products:

  • All Universal 2nd Gen
  • All Universal DisplayPort

Important Notes

  • Use HDMI from the console for best DQHD performance. Avoid HDMI 1.4-based outputs if 5K is needed; you must use HDMI 2.0+ cables.
  • Based on configuration, try 5120×1440 @ 30Hz first before attempting to upscale to 3840×1080 @ 60Hz.
  • Secure KVMs only read blocks 1 & 2 of the EDID page file. Most displays define 3840×1080 @ 60Hz as the preferred timing in these blocks. 5120×1440 is typically defined in blocks 3 & 4 and is therefore not passed by Secure KVMs.
  • You can add a custom resolution of 5120×1440 up to 60Hz and pass it through the Secure KVM. The device will not automatically send EDID for this resolution—consult your GPU manufacturer for details on creating a custom resolution.

For Reference

  • Refresh Rate Differences: Although your display may advertise 5K @ 60Hz support, the actual refresh rate is constrained by:
    • Processor/GPU output capability
    • Type of connection (HDMI vs DP)
    • Host-to-display conversion support of the KVM switch
  • HDMI 1.4 Limitation: Some systems (e.g., certain Dell implementations of Intel 770) only offer HDMI 1.4b, which does not support 5K resolutions.
  • No Override: Secure KVMs cannot upscale or override refresh-rate limitations imposed by the source system or port version.
  • If using a docking station, refresh rates may be limited by its capabilities.

Important Notes about Dell DQHD Support with Intel Graphics

To achieve DQHD (5120×1440) resolution on a Dell U4919, a registry modification is required on the PC to expose the 5120×1440 option. Users must install the monitor registry edit from Dell, since Intel removed support for this resolution on the U4919 model.

  • This is specifically called out on page 82 of the Dell U4919 User Manual: Dell Support – U4919DW Monitor.
  • A link to the registry edit download is also available on that page.
