1.  What is Amazon Wi-Fi Simple Setup?

Amazon Wi-Fi Simple Setup helps you connect supported smart devices to your wireless network with less required steps and less interaction from you.  Utilizing the Amazon Alexa devices in your network, Wi-Fi Simple Setup attempts to connect supported devices purchased from Amazon.com to your home wireless network using stored Wi-Fi credentials on your Alexa device.

2.  What do I need to use Wi-Fi Simple Setup?

To take advantage of the Amazon Wi-Fi Simple Setup, you will need to ensure that you have a Wemo® device purchased from Amazon.com that supports Wi-Fi Simple Setup along with a compatible helper device.

3.  How does Wi-Fi Simple Setup work?

When purchasing a Wemo from Amazon.com that supports Wi-Fi Simple Setup, it will be linked to your Amazon account and tagged for Wi-Fi Simple Setup.  When you receive the Wemo, simply plug it in to a power outlet that is in range of a Wi-Fi Simple Setup-enabled helper device to begin setup.  The helper device will communicate with your Wemo and provide your Wi-Fi network information and complete the setup for you.

4.  What is a helper device?

Helper devices are select Amazon Alexa-compatible devices that support Wi-Fi Simple Setup.  Helper devices must be registered to the same Amazon account as the Wemo device you are trying to set up and must be within range of the Wemo during setup.

5.  Do I have to use Amazon Wi-Fi Simple Setup?

No.  You can enable and disable Wi-Fi Simple Setup for your devices on your Amazon.com account under Manage Your Content and Devices.  Turning this OFF will keep Wi-Fi Simple Setup-compatible devices from obtaining your wireless network credentials.  When Wi-Fi Simple Setup is turned OFF, your Wemo device can be set up using normal installation steps.

6.  Is Wi-Fi Simple Setup always enabled?

No.  Wi-Fi Simple Setup is only available during initial setup.  After your Wemo has been set up once, Wi-Fi Simple Setup will no longer be available.

7.  What is Frustration-Free Setup and is it different than Wi-Fi Simple Setup?

Frustration-Free Setup is the term Amazon uses for connected devices that use Alexa to make setup easier.  Wi-Fi Simple Setup is one of the three setup methods that make up the Frustration-Free Setup process.

2.  What Wemo devices support Amazon Wi-Fi Simple Setup?

The Wemo WiFi Smart Plug, WSP080 support Amazon Wi-Fi Simple Setup. 

3.  Do I have to purchase my Wemo from Amazon.com to take advantage of Wi-Fi Simple Setup?

Yes.  Before the Wemo is shipped from Amazon, it is scanned into their system and linked to your Amazon account.  Purchasing a Wemo from another retailer or seller will not link to your Amazon account and therefore not enable Wi-Fi Simple Setup.

4.  Someone purchased a Wemo from Amazon.com for me as a gift.  Can I use Wi-Fi Simple Setup?

No.  When a Wemo is purchased from Amazon.com, it is linked to that account.  If someone purchased it as a gift for you, it will be linked to their Amazon account and Wi-Fi Simple Setup will not work.  You will need to use the normal setup methods available for your Wemo.

5.  Can I use Wi-Fi Simple Setup without a helper device?

No.  The helper device communicates with your Wemo and provides the wireless network information for setup.  Without a helper device available, your Wemo will proceed to the normal setup mode.

TROUBLESHOOTING

1.  What happens if Wi-Fi Simple Setup fails?

If Wi-Fi Simple Setup fails, your Wemo device will proceed to the normal setup mode.

2.  Can I re-enable Wi-Fi Simple Setup in the future?

Wi-Fi Simple Setup can only be used during initial setup.  If the initial setup fails, you can power cycle your Wemo device to try again.  If the initial setup has completed, you will no longer be able to take advantage of Wi-Fi Simple Setup in the future.

3.  Why does the Wi-Fi Simple Setup keep on failing?

If Wi-Fi Simple Setup is not working, please check the following below:
  • Make sure the Wemo was shipped and sold by Amazon.com.  Wemo devices purchased from other retailers or sellers are not compatible with Wi-Fi Simple Setup.
  • Make sure the Wemo device was purchased using the same Amazon account that your helper devices are registered to.
  • Make sure that Wi-Fi Simple Setup is enabled in your Amazon.com account.
  • Try relocating your Wemo and your helper device closer to each other.
  • If you have used Wi-Fi Simple Setup with this Wemo before and were successful, it will not be able to use the Wi-Fi Simple Setup again.

4.  What do I do if I still cannot get the Wi-Fi Simple Setup to work?

Wi-Fi Simple Setup is not required to set up your Wemo device.  If Wi-Fi Simple Setup continues to fail, wait 90 seconds after powering ON your Wemo to use normal setup methods such as Apple® HomeKit™ or the Wemo app.
