How to install the Wemo Doorbell using the Chime Bypass Connector

The Wemo Smart Video Doorbell, WDC010 is designed to work with your homes existing wired doorbell system. If you have a mechanical chime the doorbell can be wired in to ring the chime whenever the doorbell button is pressed.  If you would rather not use the chime or you have a digital doorbell chime you can use the included chime bypass connector.  The bypass connector allows you to disconnect your doorbell chime from power while still powering the Wemo® Doorbell.

NOTE:  If you have a mechanical chime with both a front and rear doorbell, installing the bypass connector will also disable your rear doorbell from chiming.

Step 1:  Turn OFF power to the circuit powering your doorbell.  This will reduce the chance of you becoming injured or damaging any of your existing doorbell equipment.  You can test to ensure the power is OFF by pressing the doorbell and confirming that it no longer chimes.

Step 2:  Remove the cover on your doorbell chime box.

Step 3:  Detach the wires from the Trans and Front terminals of your chime.

Step 4:  Use the bypass connector to connect the two wires together.  Only one wire can be inserted into a side of the connector and it doesn't matter which side a wire connects to.

Holding the connector with two fingers, press down on one of the buttons on the connector to open it, and insert a wire.  Release the button to clamp down on the wire.  Repeat on the other side.

Step 5:  Gently tuck the wires in to an open space on your doorbell chime and place the cover back on.

Step 6:  Once the bypass is installed you will need to put your Wemo doorbell into bypass mode.  This will keep the Wemo Doorbell from trying to ring the chime.  To do this, you will need a micro-USB cable (not included) and a 5V / 2.1A USB power adapter (not included).

Start by connecting the USB cable to the micro-USB port on the back of the doorbell.

Press and hold the doorbell button until the status light bar turns purple.  This will take about 10 seconds.

When the light turns purple, release the button and wait until the status light bar turns white.  This will take about 10 seconds.  Once it turns white, you can disconnect the USB cable and continue installing the doorbell.

Step 7:  Remove your existing doorbell from the wall. Most doorbell buttons are held in place by two screws.  On the back of the button will be two screw terminals that attach to the doorbell wiring coming out of the wall.  Unscrew the terminals and remove the wires from the button.

Step 8:  You will need to determine how you want to mount your doorbell to the wall and follow the corresponding steps to attach the mounting bracket to your wall.

Forward mounting

A forward mount places the doorbell flush with the wall.  For this method, you will only need the metal mounting bracket.  Place the bracket against the wall so the wiring hole comes out of the hole on the bracket.

Left or right angle mounting

A left or right angle mount uses the included plastic mounting wedge to angle the doorbell out.  This is normally used in situations where the doorbell is on a side wall and you want the camera to point out towards the walkway.

For this method, you will first need to install the plastic mounting wedge to your wall.  Determine which way you want the camera to face and then place the mounting wedge so that the wires coming out of the wall will stick out.  Screw the wedge into the wall using the included large screws.

Once the mounting wedge is in place, attach the metal mounting bracket to the wedge using the included small screws.

Step 9:  Attach the two doorbell wires to the screw terminals on the metal doorbell mounting plate.  The wires can be attached to either terminal.

Step 10:  You are now ready to attach the doorbell to the mounting bracket.  Angle the top of the doorbell back towards the wall and gently bring it down on to the bracket.  There is a small lip that will catch onto the bracket to hold it in place.

Step 11:  Using the included Torx T6 screwdriver and the included security screw, hold the doorbell firmly against the mounting bracket and screw it in at the bottom.  This will secure the doorbell to the bracket.

Step 12:  Turn the power to your doorbell system back ON.

Your doorbell will take about 30 seconds to light up once power is applied back. It will take up to 90 seconds for it to be ready to set up. Once it is ready follow the steps to add it to your HomeKit network.

IMPORTANT:  When using the Wemo Doorbell with the Chime Bypass connector, it is important to keep the Chime Doorbell setting in the Home app set to OFF after setup.  This will reduce the risk of damaging your Wemo Doorbell.
