Troubleshooting wireless connectivity issues

This article will guide you on how to troubleshoot connectivity problems.  Before proceeding, make sure to check the following:
  • You have an active Internet connection from the modem.  If your computer is unable to go online when directly connected to the modem, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
  • You have verified how many device/s are experiencing wireless connectivity issues.
  • You have your wireless network name (SSID) and password.  If you have forgotten or do not know the wireless network name (SSID) and password, click here.

Scenario 1:
 
When a single device is unable to connect to the wireless network, you may encounter the errors below:
  • Limited or No Connectivity
  • Invalid Password
  • Network Security Mismatch
Solution:
 
One of the most common reasons for these errors is a wrong wireless network password.  The steps below will guide you in resolving this concern.

Step 1:
Forget or remove your wireless network from the list of available networks on your device.  For detailed instructions, click here.
 
Step 2:
To add your wireless network on your device again, simply reconnect to the wireless network using the wireless network name (SSID).

Step 3:
Enter your wireless network's password if you have one.  Otherwise, leave the field blank.

IMPORTANT:  The wireless network password is case-sensitiveABC is different from abc.
 
Your wireless device should now be able to connect to your wireless network.  If you’re still having problems connecting to the wireless network, refer to the device’s user manual for more information.
 
Scenario 2:
 
When multiple devices are unable to connect to the wireless network, it may be caused by several factors such as:
  • Wireless interference
  • Unsupported wireless security mode
  • Outdated firmware or adapter driver
Solution to wireless interference - Changing the router's Wireless Channel
 
Step 1:
Connect an Ethernet cable from the computer to the LAN port on the back of the router.
 
Step 2:
Access the router's web-based setup page by opening a web browser like Internet Explorer®.  In the Address bar, enter your router's IP Address then press [Enter].
 
NOTE:  The default local IP Address of Belkin routers is 192.168.2.1.  If you are having problems accessing the default IP Address, click on the links below:
 
Step 3:
Click Login at the top-right corner of the page.
 
Step 4:
Enter your router's password if you have one.  Otherwise, leave the field blank then click Submit.
 
QUICK TIP:  By default, Belkin routers are shipped without a password.
 
Step 5:
Click on Channel and SSID under Wireless.
 
Step 6:
Set the Wireless Channel to 6.
 
NOTE:  Other preferred channels to use are 1, 9 and 11.
 
Step 7:
Click Apply Changes to save the updates made.
 
Solution to unsupported security mode - Wireless security updates
 
It is highly recommended to use Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) or Wi-Fi Protected Access II (WPA2™) security types.  Other than providing better security, this will establish a stable connection with your wireless device, especially devices with the latest technology.  For instructions on setting up WPA™ or WPA2™ personal wireless security on a Belkin wireless router, click here.

Solution to outdated firmware or adapter drivers - Router Firmware / Adapter Driver updates
 
If you are still having problems in connecting to the wireless network, a firmware upgrade must be performed on the router.  To learn more about upgrading the router's firmware, click here.

If you are still experiencing intermittent or dropping connection issues with the wireless network, you may need to update the driver of your wireless adapter.  If you are using a Belkin adapter, click here for instructions.  If you are using a non-Belkin adapter, refer to your adapter's documentation to learn how to update the driver.
