Creating the Motion Detector rule on the Wemo App

Another way that Wemo® allows you to control your devices is with motion.  Using the Wemo Motion Sensor or a Wemo NetCam, you can control your Wemo devices with movement through Motion Detector.  This allows for an added level of convenience and security when using Wemo.

The Wemo Motion Detector rule requires one of the following Wemo products to function:
  • Wemo Motion Sensor, F7C028
  • Wemo NetCam Wi-Fi Camera with Night Vision, F7D7601
  • Wemo NetCam HD Wi-Fi Camera with Night Vision, F7D7602
  • Wemo NetCam HD+ Wi-Fi Camera with Glass Lens and Night Vision, F7D7606
If you do not have a Wemo Motion Sensor or a Wemo NetCam, you will not be able to create a Motion Detector rule.  In this situation, Motion Detector will be greyed out in the rules list and not accessible.

With Motion Detector you will be able to control the following devices:
  • Wemo Switch Smart Plug, F7C027
  • Wemo® Insight Smart Plug, F7C029
  • Wemo Smart Light Switch, F7C030
  • Wemo Maker™, F7C043
  • Wemo® Smart LED Bulb, F7C033
  • Wemo WiFi Smart Dimmer, F7C059
  • Wemo Mini Smart Plug, F7C063
  • Wemo WiFi Smart Light Switch, WLS040
  • Wemo Smart Light Switch 3-Way, WLS0403
In this article, you will learn how to create a Motion Detector rule using a Wemo NetCam.  Note that the steps are the same whether you are using a Wemo NetCam or Motion Sensor.  The iOS version of the Wemo App is used for this walkthrough so what you see may vary slightly if you are using the Android™ version of the Wemo App.

Step 1:  Launch the User-added image App.

Step 2:  From the main screen, tap on Rules to bring up the rules list.

Step 3:  Tap on the + icon located on the top right-hand corner to bring up the rule creation menu.

Step 4:  Under CONTROL A DEVICE, tap on Motion Detector.  If this option is greyed out, that means you have neither a Wemo NetCam nor a Wemo Motion Sensor installed on your network or it is not being detected by the Wemo App.  If you do have a Wemo NetCam or Wemo Motion Sensor installed, but the Wemo App is not detecting it, click here to learn what troubleshooting steps you can do to resolve this issue.

Step 5:  In the IF section, choose your Wemo NetCam or Motion Sensor.  Your devices will be shown by the name you gave it.  In this example, we chose our Wemo Netcam named F7D7606v1.

Step 6:  Under the TURN ON/OFF section, select the Wemo device or devices that you want to control whenever your Wemo Motion Sensor or NetCam senses motion.  In this example, we chose Wemo Light Switch.

There are two options available to activate your Wemo device:
  • on then… – This will trigger a Wemo device to turn on whenever the Wemo Motion or NetCam senses motion and then turn off after a period of time of your choosing when there is no longer any motion.  Tap Done after selecting your desired option.
  • off – This will turn a Wemo device off whenever your Wemo Motion Sensor or NetCam senses motion.
Every Wemo device you choose to control with a rule can have its own action and timing.  In the screenshot below, the Wemo Light Switch is set to turn on and then off 15 minutes after the Wemo Netcam no longer senses motion.

Step 7:  Scroll down to the WHEN section to schedule when you would like the Motion Detector rule to be active.  Here, you will be able to choose the times and the days of the week it will be active.

 Time Options:
  • All Day – This is the default option.  If this is chosen, the rule will be active for the entire day (24 hours).  Tapping on the slider will toggle it on or off.
  • By specific time – Use the slider to choose the clock icon User-added image if you would like to schedule a specific time for the rule to be active.
  • By sunrise or sunset – Use the slider to choose the sun icon User-added image if you would like to have this rule be started or ended based on the sunrise and sunset times for your location.  Sunrise and sunset times are not static, they change each day as the time changes for sunrise and sunset.
After choosing the time for the rule to run, you can choose what days you want it to run under the DAYS section.  By default, all 7 days of the week are chosen but you can choose any combination of days that you like.

The clock and sun icons and the days are set as active when they are highlighted in green.

You can mix and match the start and stop times between sunrise and sunset or a specific time.  For example, you can have the rule start at sunset each night but turn off at a specific time you wake up each morning.

Tap Done once you are satisfied with your settings.
All day By specific time or by sunrise/sunset
