How to install the Wemo Doorbell with a Mechanical Chime System

The Wemo Smart Video Doorbell, WDC010 is designed to work with your home's existing wired doorbell system.  If you have a mechanical chime, the doorbell can be wired in to ring the chime whenever the doorbell button is pressed.

IMPORTANT:  Before you begin, ensure that you have all necessary tools, smart home equipment, and a strong WiFi signal where you want to install the doorbell.

To install the doorbell with a mechanical chime system you will need the following:

  • A mechanical doorbell chime
  • A 16V / 30VA or 24V / 30VA doorbell transformer
  • The Wemo® Doorbell power kit
  • A Phillips screwdriver

Directions

Step 1:  Turn OFF power to the circuit powering your doorbell.  This will reduce the chance of you becoming injured or damaging any of your existing doorbell equipment.  You can test to ensure the power is OFF by pressing the doorbell and confirming that it no longer chimes.

Step 2:  Remove the cover on your chime box.  You will be installing the included power kit here so that the chime will ring when the doorbell button is pressed.

Step 3:  Your chime box should have two terminals labeled Trans and Front.  Trans is the connection from your transformer while Front is the connection to your front doorbell.  You will be using these terminals to connect the Wemo Doorbell power kit to.

NOTE:  If you also have a rear doorbell, there may be a third wire connected to the Rear terminal.

Step 4:  Connect the power kit to the Trans and Front terminals.  The order of the wires does not matter.  After connecting, use the adhesive strip on the back of the power kit to attach it to the side of your doorbell chime.

Once connected, you can replace the cover back onto the chime box.

Step 5:  Remove your existing doorbell from the wall.  Most doorbell buttons are held in place by two screws.  On the back of the button will be two screw terminals that attach to the doorbell wiring coming out of the wall.  Unscrew the terminals and remove the wires from the button.

Step 6:  You will need to determine how you want to mount your doorbell to the wall and follow the corresponding steps to attach the mounting bracket to your wall.

Forward mounting

A forward mount places the doorbell flush with the wall.  For this method, you will only need the metal mounting bracket.  Place the bracket against the wall so the wiring hole comes out of the hole on the bracket.

Left or right angle mounting

A left or right angle mount uses the included plastic mounting wedge to angle the doorbell out.  This is normally used in situations where the doorbell is on a side wall and you want the camera to point out towards the walkway.

For this method, you will first need to install the plastic mounting wedge to your wall.  Determine which way you want the camera to face and then place the mounting wedge so that the wires coming out of the wall will stick out.  Screw the wedge into the wall using the included large screws.

Once the mounting wedge is in place, attach the metal mounting bracket to the wedge using the included small screws.

Step 7:  Attach the two doorbell wires to the screw terminals on the metal doorbell mounting plate.  The wires can be attached to either terminal.

Step 8:  You are now ready to attach the doorbell to the mounting bracket.  Angle the top of the doorbell back towards the wall and gently bring it down on to the bracket.  There is a small lip that will catch onto the bracket to hold it in place.

Step 9:  Using the included Torx T6 screwdriver and the included security screw, hold the doorbell firmly against the mounting bracket and screw it in at the bottom.  This will secure the doorbell to the bracket.

Step 10:  Turn the power to your doorbell system back ON.

Your doorbell will take about 30 seconds to light up once power is applied back.  It will take up to 90 seconds for it to be ready to set up.  Once it is ready, follow the steps to add it to your HomeKit® network.
