How to add an exception to Windows Firewall on computers with Windows Operating System


The Windows Firewall protects your computer by blocking communication attempts of bugs and malicious software to connect to your computer.  Sometimes, the Windows Firewall can block a program that you use for connecting to the internet.  If you are experiencing this problem, you can add a Windows Firewall exception for the program that's having problems so you use can it without the Windows Firewall blocking it.
 
Follow the steps below to learn how to add an exception to Windows Firewall using Windows
® 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, or Windows 7:
 
Step 1:
In the Search User-added image bar, enter “control panel” then click on Open below the Control Panel icon from the search results.

Step 2:
Under Control Panel Home, click System and Security > Windows Defender Firewall.

Step 3:
Under Control Panel Home, click Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall.

You will then be directed to a list of your computer's programs and applications.
 
Step 4:
Click  User-added image.
 

Step 5:
Search for the app or program that you want to add an exception to, then tick the checkboxes beside it under the Private or Public column according to your preference.

QUICK TIP:  If the program that you want to add an exception to is not in the list, click on the User-added image button then select the program from the list.  You may also click the User-added image button to manually search for the path of the program on your computer.   Once finished, click  User-added image.

Step 6:
Click User-added image.
 
You should have successfully added an exception to your Windows Firewall now.

 
Step 1:
Right-click on the Start User-added image  button then click Control Panel.

QUICK TIP:  You can also click the User-added image icon in the Charms bar.  Enter “control panel” in the search field then click on the icon from the search results.

Step 2:
Click Windows Firewall.

Step 3:
Under Control Panel Home, click Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall.

You will then be directed to a list of your computer's programs and applications.
 

Step 4:

Step 5:
Search for the app or program that you want to add an exception to, then tick the checkboxes beside it under the Private or Public column according to your preference.

Step 6:

Click the Pearl User-added image button located at the bottom-left corner of the screen then click Control Panel.

Under Windows Firewall, click Allow a program through Windows Firewall.
