Why does the Wemo app need my location?
If you have a Wemo® account, you do not need to allow location permission. To learn more about Wemo account, click here.
NOTE: If you did not create a Wemo account, you need to allow location permission first in order to set up a Wemo account. You can disable location permission once your account is created.
If you are connected to your Wi-Fi, the Wemo app will use the network to set up and control your Wemo devices. If you are connected to the internet through some other way like cellular data or a different Wi-Fi, the Wemo app will use the Wemo servers to control your devices.
With iOS 13, Apple® started asking whether you are okay with sharing your location before apps can access your Wi-Fi name. That is because the name of a Wi-Fi can drop clues about your location, much like the Wi-Fi name of your local coffee shop tells you which coffee shop it is. However, Wemo does not use or store your data location.
With the release of iOS 14, Apple will ask you for your precise or approximate location. Precise location is what the Wemo app needs to access your Wi-Fi name. Make sure Precise is turned On when you see this screen below:
Why do I not need to allow location permission if I have a Wemo account?
Once you create an account, we no longer use your local Wi-Fi to communicate with your Wemo devices. It is all done over the cloud on our servers.
Location vs Local network access
With iOS 14, you will also be asked to allow local network access when you open the Wemo app. While location is used to find your Wi-Fi name, you still have to allow the Wemo app to use your Wi-Fi or the network access. Your local network is the Wi-Fi at your home where your Wemo devices are connected.
What location information does the Wemo app use?
Wemo will only use your location permission to access your Wi-Fi name.
Does the Wemo app store any location information?
No, Wemo does not store, share, or sell your location data. To see our privacy policy, click here. To learn more about Apple local network privacy measures, click here.
