Supported configurations for the Wemo WiFi Smart 3-Way Light Switch, WLS0403

The Wemo® WiFi Smart 3-Way Light Switch, WLS0403 can replace your existing 3-Way (single pole/double throw) and 2-Way (single pole/single throw) light switches.  This article will guide you through the supported installation configurations for the Wemo 3-Way Light Switch.

IMPORTANT:
  • The Wemo 3-Way Light Switch cannot be used in a circuit with dimmer switches.  This will cause the Wemo to malfunction or not work at all.
  • The Wemo 3-Way Light Switch can be used in a 4-Way circuit but cannot replace a 4-Way light switch.  It can only be used to replace 3-Way light switches in this circuit.

2-Way Configuration

Using a single Wemo WiFi Smart 3-Way Light Switch, WLS0403 in a 2-Way configuration

Your Wemo 3-Way Light Switch can be used as a standard 2-Way light switch.  In this configuration the Wemo 3-Way Light Switch will be the only switch in the circuit controlling the light.  Since a second light switch is not being used, only the traveler wire 1 (blue) will be used in this configuration with the traveler wire 2 (red) capped off using a wire nut.  Below is an example of how the wiring should be connected.

The configuration above requires the following electrical wiring:
  • An incoming AC line wire from your breaker panel
  • An incoming neutral wire from your breaker panel
  • A line/load wire connected to your light fixture/load
NOTE:  A ground wire or ground screw is optional.  For instructions on how to install your Wemo 3-Way Light Switch as replacement of a 2-Way light switch, click here.

3-Way Configurations

Using a single Wemo WiFi Smart 3-Way Light Switch, WLS0403 with a “dumb” 3-Way light switch in a 3-Way configuration

The design of the Wemo 3-Way Light Switch allows you to use a single Wemo 3-Way Light Switch together with a standard “dumb” 3-Way light switch in a circuit to control a light.  You will still be able to use the Wemo App to control your light as well as controlling manually from the Wemo 3-Way Light Switch or the standard 3-Way light switch.  Below is an example of how the wiring is connected.
