How to link your Wemo device to your Amazon Alexa account

A feature of Smart Home technologies like Wemo® is the ability to control your devices using your smartphone, tablet or even your voice.  Using the voice control functionality of the Amazon Echo, you can tell Alexa what to do with your Wemo devices.  This article will walk you through linking your Wemo with your Amazon Alexa account, allowing you to control your Wemo device with your voice.
 


Before you begin

There are a few basic requirements before you can begin using your Alexa to control your Wemo devices:
  1.   An Amazon Echo
  2.   A device with the Alexa App and Wemo App installed
  3.   A supported Wemo device to control
The following Wemo devices are compatible with Amazon Alexa:
  • Wemo Switch Smart Plug, F7C027
  • Wemo Insight Smart Plug, F7C029
  • Wemo Smart Light Switch, F7C030
  • Wemo WiFi Smart Dimmer, F7C059
  • Wemo Mini Smart Plug, F7C063
  • Wemo WiFi Smart 3-Way Light Switch, WLS0403
  • Wemo Light Switch, WLS040
 

 
Linking Wemo to the Amazon Alexa App

To link your Wemo device with Alexa, you need to make sure that your Wemo device and the Amazon Echo are both working and connected to the same Wi-Fi.  Your Wemo device must have Remote Access enabled or you will not be able to control them with Alexa.

Enabling the Wemo Skill in the Alexa App

The first part of linking your Alexa App with Wemo is to enable the Wemo Skill in the Alexa App.

NOTE:  Steps may differ if you are using an iOS.
 
Step 1:  Open the Amazon Alexa App and tap the Devices tab located on the lower right-hand corner of the App.

Step 2:  Tap YOUR SMART HOME SKILLS at the bottom of the DEVICES tab.

Step 3:  Tap ENABLE SMART HOME SKILLS to see the list of smart home skills that you can enable.

Step 4:  Tap the magnifying glass icon to search for Wemo.

Step 5:  Select Wemo from the list.

Step 6:  Tap ENABLE TO USE.

Step 7:  Tap Ready To Verify to begin the process of enabling the Wemo Smart Home Skills.

Step 8:  Press the power button of your Wemo device before the timer ends.

Step 9:  Upon detection, the Amazon Alexa App will let you know which Wemo device it detected and what it can do.  If the detected device is correct, tap Yes, that’s me.

Step 10:  Once your Wemo has been successfully linked, close the page or window to discover the Wemo Devices you want to control with Alexa.

Discovering Your Wemo Devices
 
After you have successfully linked your Wemo and Alexa, you will need to use the Alexa App to discover your Wemo devices.  
 
Step 1:  Tap on DISCOVER DEVICES.

Alexa will begin discovering your Wemo devices.  This may take up to 45 seconds.  A status bar in the Alexa App will let you know the progress.

Step 2:  Once your available Wemo devices are discovered you will need to configure them.  Tap on SET UP DEVICE.

NOTE:  In this example, a Wemo Light Switch is being used.

Step 3:  If you like to add your Wemo device to a group, tap on CHOOSE GROUP or tap SKIP to simply add it to the Alexa App.

Step 4:  Tap DONE.

Once your Wemo devices are configured, begin controlling them using your Alexa App or your voice.
