How to troubleshoot connection problems with Sony PSP® and PSP® go

Connecting your PSP® and PSP® go to your Wi-Fi is fast and easy as long as you have all the necessary information.  However, there are instances when you can experience intermittent Wi-Fi access.

These are some of the common reasons why the PSP and PSP go cannot connect to your Wi-Fi:

Wireless switch is turned OFF
Incorrect security settings
MAC Filtering is enabled on your Belkin router
Dropping/Intermittent connection with the wireless router
Unable to connect to an online game
Outdated system software version

Wireless switch is turned OFF

A switch controls the wireless capability of your device.  Make sure that this is turned ON so that your PSP or PSP go will automatically connect to the Wi-Fi.  The wireless switch is located on the left side.  Slide the switch up to enable the wireless capability of your device.

Incorrect security settings

If your Wi-Fi is secured, you will need to know your router’s wireless settings in order to connect to it.  These are the important wireless settings you will need:
  • Wi-Fi name (SSID)
  • Wireless security mode
  • Security key
MAC Filtering is enabled on your Belkin router

MAC Filtering is an added security feature on your Belkin router that can either prevent or allow specific MAC addresses to be connected to your Wi-Fi.  If this feature is enabled, you will need to add your device’s MAC address in the MAC Filtering tab of your Belkin router.  For details on how to do this, click here.

Dropping/Intermittent connection with the wireless router

Try moving your device closer to your wireless router to enhance the wireless signal.  There could be some interference or obstacles between your device and your router. Large metal object or walls can interfere with the signal including other devices like microwave ovens, 2.4 GHz cordless phones, Bluetooth® devices, high-powered audio equipment and many more.

Unable to connect to an online game

There are some PlayStation® systems that have difficulties in connecting to online games or connecting to other players.  This would most likely be because you need to open ports on your Belkin router.  For step-by-step instructions on how to open ports on your Belkin router, click here.

Outdated system software version

Your PSP and PSP go performs better if it has the latest system software installed.  You can visit your device’s system Software Update for information on the most recent version.

To check what version is installed on your device, go to Settings > System Settings and select System Information.  You will see the System Software version number from there.
