Checking my computer’s IP address

One way to verify if your computer is properly communicating with your Belkin router is to check your computer's IP address.  To do this, your computer should be connected to your router either wired or wirelessly before checking its IP address.

Select your computer's operating system below for instructions:


Windows® 8
Windows 7
OS X®

 
Windows® 8

There are two ways in checking the IP address from a Windows 8 computer:

Command Prompt
Network Connections

 
Command Prompt

NOTE:  In this example, a wired connection is used.
 
Step 1:
Click the Search User-added image icon on the Charms bar.
 
Step 2:
Select Command Prompt.

Step 3:
Enter "ipconfig" then press [Enter]

Step 4:
Under Ethernet, look for the IPv4 Address.  This is your computer's IP address.


NOTE:  For wireless connection, look for the IPv4 Address under Wi-Fi.

Network Connections

NOTE:  In this example, a wireless connection is used.
 
Step 1:
Click the User-added image icon located at the lower-right portion of your computer's window.

Step 2:
Click Network and Internet.

Step 3:
Look for the Connections section and click Wi-Fi.

NOTE:  For wired connection, click Ethernet.

Step 4:
Click on the Details button and look for the IPv4 Address section on the Network Connection Details window.

Windows 7

There are two ways in checking the IP address from a Windows 7 computer.

NOTE:  A wired connection is used in both examples.

Step 1:
Click the Start User-added image button at the bottom left corner of the screen.

Step 2:
Select Command Prompt.

Step 3:
Enter "ipconfig" then press [Enter]

Step 4:
Under Local Area Connection, look for the IPv4 Address.  This is your computer's IP address.

NOTE:  For wireless connection, look for the IPv4 Address under Wireless Network Connection.

Step 1:
Click on the Network Connections User-added image icon on your system tray and click Open Network and Sharing Center.

Look for Connections and click Local Area Connection.

NOTE:  For wireless connection, click Wireless Network Connection.

Step 3:
Click the Details button and look for the IPv4 Address section.

Step 1:
Click the Apple® menu at the top left corner of the screen, then select System Preferences.

Step 2:
Under the Internet & Network section, click Network.

Step 3:
If you are using a wired connection, click on Ethernet.  The value listed under IP Address is your computer's IP address while the value under Router is your router's local IP address.

If you are using a wireless connection, click on Wi-Fi then click the Advanced button located on the lower-right portion of the screen.

On the new screen that would appear, click the TCP/IP tab.  Your computer's IP address is listed under IPv4 Address and the value under Router indicates your router's IP address.
