Why is my USB-C battery pack not charging my iPhone 15?

Last Updated: 10/26/2023

In September 2023, Apple® released their iPhone® 15 series of phones. These new models replaced the proprietary Lightning® port with a USB-C® port. This port can not only charge and sync your iPhone but now allows you to charge your low-power devices such as your Apple Watch® and AirPods® directly from your phone while on the go.

Since this new USB-C port allows for power to flow in both directions (into the phone and out to a connected device), you may experience unexpected charging behavior when using a USB-C-enabled portable battery pack. Not all USB-C-enabled portable battery packs support charging devices from their USB-C ports. These devices may only support charging the battery back itself through its USB-C port and will instead charge connected devices using a USB-A port.

If your USB-C-enabled portable battery pack does not support device charging through the USB-C port, you may experience one of the following behaviors:

  • Your iPhone indicates an invalid device was connected.
  • Your iPhone does not recognize the battery pack was connected and nothing happens.
  • Your iPhone indicates a device was connected but draws too much power and is not supported.
  • Your iPhone indicates a device was connected and starts charging the battery pack, causing the phone battery to drain.

How do I tell if my Belkin Battery Pack supports device charging over USB-C?

Belkin manufactures multiple battery packs with USB-A, USB-C, and even Lightning ports or connectors. Almost all Belkin Battery Packs have labels on the USB-C ports that indicate their charging capabilities:

  • In / Input: This port only supports charging the battery pack with this port.
  • Out / Output: This port only supports charging a connected device from this port.
  • In and Out / Input and Output: This port supports both charging a connected device and recharging the battery pack.

If your Belkin Battery Pack does not have a label on the USB-C port, you can check the Belkin Support Knowledge Base for more information on the capabilities of your battery packVisit the Belkin Support Center to learn more.
