Benefits to Exercise

Kaelin, Carolyn M., M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.S., and Francesca Coltrera. 2007. Cancer and staying fit. Newsweek, 26 March:
www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17662260/site/newsweek/

  • Exercise substantially reduces the odds of ever getting breast cancer, lengthens survival, and considerably enhances quality of life for women with breast cancer.
  • Regular exercise early in life and exercise vigorous enough to suppress other reproductive hormones may make a difference, too.
  • After a woman is diagnosed, exercise can dramatically lengthen survival and lower the odds of another tumor.
  • Resistance training helps reverse the muscle loss and fat gain called sarcopenia that often follows chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. Resistance training slows bone loss and may even strengthen bones.

Stein, Rob. 2005. Exercise can cut risk of dying from breast cancer. Washington Post, 25 May:
www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/05/24/AR2005052401027.html

  • Being physically active boosts the odds that breast-cancer patients will survive the disease.
  • Breast-cancer patients who walk or do other kinds of moderate exercise for three to five hours a week are about 50 percent less likely to die from the disease than sedentary women.
  • Physical activity lowers hormone levels, and the lower hormone levels reduce the chances of a recurrence.
  • Regular exercise reduces the death rate among women who have had breast cancer.

About The Breast Cancer Research Foundation

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® was founded in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder as an independent, not-for-profit 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to funding innovative clinical and genetic research. The Foundation supports scientists at top universities and academic medical centers worldwide conducting the most advanced and promising breast-cancer research that will lead to prevention and a cure in our lifetime. A minimum of 85 cents of each dollar donated to the Foundation goes directly to breast-cancer research and awareness programs. In October 2007, $32 million will be awarded to more than 150 researchers across the US and in Canada, Latin America, the Middle East, and throughout Europe. Money magazine named BCRF one of America’s eight top charities. And for the sixth consecutive year, BCRF received Charity Navigator’s highest rating, four stars, thus outperforming most other charities in America.
